The drive from EGE to Vail
Your driver picks you up at Eagle County Regional Airport and heads east on I-70 for 36 miles.
Leave the interstate at exit 176 for West Vail or exit 180 for Vail Village. The South Frontage Road takes you straight into the village roundabouts.
The airport sits at 6,547 feet. Vail’s base is at 8,120 feet. You gain 1,573 feet over the trip, with no summit in between.
In summer the drive takes 35 to 40 minutes.
What you skip by not landing in Denver
From Denver, Vail is about 120 miles away. That drive crosses Vail Pass at 10,662 feet.
Vail Pass closes for weather roughly 10 to 25 times a winter. The Eagle route stays west of the pass. A closure there does not sit between EGE and your lodge.
For the full Denver drive, see Denver to Vail.
Winter rules still apply on I-70
No pass does not mean no winter rules. Colorado’s Traction Law covers I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 to May 31.
The I-70 stretch from the airport to Vail sits inside that corridor. If you rent a car at EGE, check the tires before you leave the lot. Tread and fine details are in our traction law guide.
First night above 8,000 feet
Vail’s base sits just over the 8,000-foot line. Above that height, altitude guidance says to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night.
First-day advice is in our altitude guide.

Questions we actually get asked
- How long does it take to drive from Eagle airport to Vail?
- 36 miles and 35m–40m in summer.
- Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
- Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
- How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
- Vail sits at 8,120 ft, which is 1,573 feet above Eagle airport. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night.
- Will our skis and luggage fit?
- A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
- Where do I meet my driver at Eagle airport?
- Private cars meet passengers outside Door 6 of the main terminal, next to oversized ski and snowboard bag claim. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
