The route

I-70 west to the Eisenhower Tunnel, then CO-9 south through Frisco. It is 104 miles from Denver International Airport, and 80 from downtown Denver.

The turn onto CO-9 is where the drive gets quiet. You leave the interstate and the traffic thins out.

Clear conditions put the trip at 2h–2h 30m.

Altitude is the real story here

Breckenridge town sits at 9,600 feet. Denver, which visitors already call high, is 5,280.

The standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night. This trip gains more than four times that in a single afternoon. Nobody follows the rule on a ski week — the flights and the lift tickets are already booked — but you can make the transition easier:

  • Sleep one night in Denver before going up, if the schedule allows it
  • Skip alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day, more than feels necessary

The one thing you should not do is drive yourself up while dehydrated after a red-eye. Altitude and fatigue compound, and the Eisenhower Tunnel approach is not a forgiving place to notice it.

The section people underestimate

Colorado’s traction law covers I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 to May 31, and our vehicles are compliant for the whole of it.

CO-9 south of Frisco is not in that corridor at all. It is two lanes and exposed, and the final stretch into Breckenridge is frequently the worst driving of the trip. It also comes last, after the tunnel is behind you and everyone in the car has relaxed.

What it costs

From $550 for an SUV with up to six passengers, one way, for the whole car.

Shared shuttles to Breckenridge start around $65 per seat. For most group sizes that is the cheaper option, and we would rather you hear it from us than work it out afterwards.

The private rate is not buying a discount. It is buying your own departure time, no intermediate stops, door to door, and a car sized to your gear rather than to the average passenger.

Ski gear

The constraint on this route is passenger count, because the party that comes to Breckenridge is usually a group.

An SUV seats up to six. Six people with a full week of gear is close to its limit, because the third row and the cargo space behind it compete for the same volume. Larger groups, or six with a lot of gear, go in the Sprinter, which seats up to twelve and is quoted on request.

Send us the head count and the ski bag count together. Those two numbers decide the vehicle, and they decide it before the trip rather than at the curb.

Going back to DEN

Breckenridge has its own version of the problem: you rejoin I-70 at Frisco, together with everyone leaving Summit County at once.

We set the pickup time with your quote. There is more on departure timing on the airport page.

Per vehicle or per seat: the actual math

Shared shuttles charge each passenger. We charge for the car. Which one wins depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.

PassengersShared shuttle, totalOur carPer seat with usCheaper
1$65$550$550Shuttle
2$130$550$275Shuttle
3$195$550$183Shuttle
4$260$550$138Shuttle
6$390$550$92Shuttle

On price alone the shuttle wins at every group size on this route. Shuttle rates come from the operator's own page: shared shuttle seats start around $65 per person.

Price is not the only difference. A shared shuttle, bus or train carries other passengers, makes other stops and leaves on its own schedule. The private car leaves when your flight lands and drives to one address.

Questions we actually get asked

How long does it take to drive from Denver airport to Breckenridge?
104 miles and 2h–2h 30m in clear conditions. Winter weekends run longer.
How much is a car from Denver airport to Breckenridge?
From $550 one way for an SUV with up to six passengers — the price is for the vehicle, not per passenger. Tolls, child seats and gratuity are included. Larger groups ride in a Sprinter, quoted on request.
What is the high point of this route?
Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 ft. Weather closes it from time to time, and any detour adds time.
Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
Breckenridge sits at 9,600 ft, which is 4,320 feet above Denver. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night — a transfer covers that in 2h–2h 30m, which is why the first night often feels rough.
Will our skis and luggage fit?
A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
