Denver → Aspen
Denver to Aspen Car Service
Aspen is the one route where the calendar changes the map. When Independence Pass is open there is a shorter road over it. When it closes for the winter, the drive becomes 220 miles.

Two different drives, depending on the season
Independence Pass tops out at 12,095 feet. It is the direct line from the I-70 corridor into Aspen, and it is closed for the winter.
When it is open, the pass cuts about 40 miles off the drive, though its narrow switchbacks give back most of the time. When it is closed, the only route is I-70 west past Vail to Glenwood Springs, then CO-82 south up the Roaring Fork Valley — 220 miles and 3 to 4.5 hours.
The winter route still crosses the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet and Vail Pass at 10,662. You get both of the Vail passes, and then another hour of driving past them.
That is why the rate is what it is. Not prestige — the car is committed for most of a day.
What it costs
Our rate starts at $950 for an SUV with up to six passengers, one way, quoted before you book.
For comparison, published rates from other operators on this route run from about $1,285 to $1,495. Aspen is the one drive where we come in under the market rather than at it.
Ask for the exact number for your date rather than assuming the seasonal route applies — the two versions of this drive are about 40 miles and one mountain pass apart.
Flying into Aspen directly
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is three miles from downtown.
If your ASE flight goes and you need a car for three miles, that is an easy booking. If it does not and you land at DEN instead, you need 220 miles of winter driving at no notice.
Call us before you join the rental line if that happens. Whatever grounded your flight has grounded other people’s too.
The Glenwood Springs stretch
CO-82 from Glenwood Springs to Aspen runs 40 miles up the Roaring Fork Valley through Carbondale and Basalt.
It is not a mountain pass, but it is where winter timing goes wrong. In a storm the plows reach I-70 before they reach this valley, so the last 40 miles can be slower than the 180 that came before them.
A quote promising Aspen in three hours in January was written by someone who has not driven it in January.
Vehicles, for a four-hour drive
Distance changes what counts as a comfortable seat.
On the 1h 48m run to Keystone, a full vehicle is fine. Over four hours and two passes, the back row turns into an endurance test — particularly for whoever ends up holding the bag that did not fit behind them.
The Suburban is the more honest option at this distance: 36.7 inches of legroom in the third row, and 41.5 cubic feet still behind it. Send us the group size and the gear, and we will tell you whether it is one vehicle or two before you book rather than at the curb.
Timing your return
You are crossing two passes and a valley road, in the dark for part of the winter, on the same day as everyone else leaving the valley. This is the route where a departure time that looks excessive on paper is the one that gets you to the gate.
We set it with your quote, based on your flight and the conditions that morning.

Per vehicle or per seat: the actual math
Shared shuttles charge each passenger. We charge for the car. Which one wins depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.
| Passengers | Shared shuttle, total | Our car | Per seat with us | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $130 | $950 | $950 | Shuttle |
| 2 | $260 | $950 | $475 | Shuttle |
| 3 | $390 | $950 | $317 | Shuttle |
| 4 | $520 | $950 | $238 | Shuttle |
| 6 | $780 | $950 | $158 | Shuttle |
On price alone the shuttle wins at every group size on this route. Shuttle rates come from the operator's own page: shared shuttle seats are $130 per person, before airport fees.
Price is not the only difference. A shared shuttle, bus or train carries other passengers, makes other stops and leaves on its own schedule. The private car leaves when your flight lands and drives to one address.
Questions we actually get asked
- How long does it take to drive from Denver airport to Aspen?
- 220 miles and 3h–4h 30m in clear conditions. Winter weekends run longer.
- How much is a car from Denver airport to Aspen?
- From $950 one way for an SUV with up to six passengers — the price is for the vehicle, not per passenger. Tolls, child seats and gratuity are included. Larger groups ride in a Sprinter, quoted on request.
- Which high points does this route cross?
- Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 ft, Vail Pass at 10,662 ft. Weather closes them from time to time, and any detour adds time.
- Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
- Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
- How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
- The town of Aspen sits at 7,908 ft, 2,628 feet above Denver — below the 8,000-foot line where sleeping-elevation guidance starts.
- Will our skis and luggage fit?
- A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
- Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
- Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
- Should I fly into ASE instead?
- ASE is about 5 minutes from Aspen. Tell us which airport you are landing at when you request the quote.
