One climb instead of two
I-70 west, through the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet, then down to the resort. Ninety-three miles, roughly 1h 48m in clear conditions.
Compare that with Vail at 120 miles across two passes, or Aspen at 220 in winter. Keystone is the reason a long weekend works here and does not work further west.
Critically, the route does not cross Vail Pass. One climb, one descent, done. In a storm that single difference is worth more than any vehicle feature.
When the short drive stops being short
On busy weekends and in poor weather the trip runs past 2h 30m.
The bottleneck is always the same place: the approach to the Eisenhower Tunnel, in both directions. At 11,158 feet it is the highest vehicular tunnel in the United States, and every vehicle heading to Summit County passes through it. One spun-out rental car closes it.
There is a bypass over Loveland Pass at 11,990 feet, used by hazmat traffic that is not permitted in the tunnel. It is not a shortcut. It is a higher, exposed road that closes in exactly the conditions that would make you want it.
We plan around the tunnel rather than around the bypass.
Elevation
Keystone sits at 9,280 feet. Denver is 5,280. You gain 4,000 feet in under two hours.
Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night, which no ski trip respects. What you can do is arrive hydrated, skip the first-night drinks, and not add a mountain drive to a red-eye.
At 9,280 feet Keystone sits lower than Breckenridge at 9,600, which matters if altitude has bothered you before. Arriving rested rather than after two hours at the wheel is part of the same calculation.
Winter requirements
Colorado’s traction law is in force here from September 1 to May 31, and every vehicle we run meets it for the full season.
Worth knowing before you rent instead: the requirement is about tires, not drivetrain. A four-wheel-drive SUV on all-season tires with worn tread does not satisfy the law, and the tunnel approach is exactly where that gets discovered.
Vehicles
The short run changes the calculation. Two hours in a third-row seat is tolerable in a way that four hours to Aspen is not, so a full vehicle works here when it would not work further west.
Capacities and cargo figures are on the fleet page. Send us the head count and the ski bag count and we will pick the car.
Heading back
The short drive tempts people to leave late, and the tunnel queue forms well before the portal.
We work the departure time back from your flight rather than from the map.

Per vehicle or per seat: the actual math
Shared shuttles charge each passenger. We charge for the car. Which one wins depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.
| Passengers | Shared shuttle, total | Our car | Per seat with us | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $59–$129 | $499 | $499 | Shuttle |
| 2 | $118–$258 | $499 | $250 | Shuttle |
| 3 | $177–$387 | $499 | $166 | Shuttle |
| 4 | $236–$516 | $499 | $125 | Depends on the date |
| 6 | $354–$774 | $499 | $83 | Depends on the date |
For one or two people the shuttle is cheaper, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. From 4 passengers the answer starts depending on the date you travel. Shuttle rates come from the operator's own page: shared shuttle seats run $59 to $129 per person depending on season.
Price is not the only difference. A shared shuttle, bus or train carries other passengers, makes other stops and leaves on its own schedule. The private car leaves when your flight lands and drives to one address.
Questions we actually get asked
- How long does it take to drive from Denver airport to Keystone?
- 93 miles and 1h 48m when the roads are clear. On peak ski weekends the same drive stretches to 2h 30m.
- How much is a car from Denver airport to Keystone?
- From $499 one way for an SUV with up to six passengers — the price is for the vehicle, not per passenger. Tolls, child seats and gratuity are included. Larger groups ride in a Sprinter, quoted on request.
- What is the high point of this route?
- Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 ft. Weather closes it from time to time, and any detour adds time.
- Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
- Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
- How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
- Keystone sits at 9,280 ft, which is 4,000 feet above Denver. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night — a transfer covers that in 1h 48m, which is why the first night often feels rough.
- Will our skis and luggage fit?
- A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
- Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
- Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
