Denver → Copper Mountain

Denver to Copper Mountain Car Service

Copper Mountain sits before the Vail Pass climb, not after it. That one piece of geography makes it the simplest major I-70 resort to reach in a storm.

Copper Mountain from the air: groomed runs and the base village in snow
Copper Mountain · 9,712 ft · 101 miles from DEN

Copper stops short of the second climb

The resort is 101 miles from Denver International. The road is I-70 west through the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet, then down through Summit County to the base.

Then it ends. The highway keeps going and starts climbing Vail Pass at 10,662 feet. You do not.

Everyone selling transfers on this corridor talks about the tunnel. Far fewer point out which resorts sit before the second summit and which sit beyond it. Copper is on the near side. Vail is not.

The peak-day figure is exactly double

Clear roads: 1h 51m. Peak ski weekend: 3h 42m.

Those are not a rounded range. The busy-day drive runs twice the length of the quiet-day drive, and the extra 111 minutes go to queuing rather than to distance.

Westbound traffic has one bore of its own through the Divide. A single spun-out rental inside it stops everything behind it, and the backup builds downhill toward Denver.

The express lane, and when it earns its price

On peak weekends and holidays, a reversible express lane opens for 13 miles between Empire Junction and Idaho Springs.

Pricing moves with demand: $3 at base, $8 to $15 in ordinary heavy traffic, $30 at the ceiling.

Whether it is worth paying depends on the hour, and that is decided on the day, from inside the traffic.

9,712 feet, reached in under 2 hours

Copper’s elevation is 9,712 feet. Denver is 5,280. You gain 4,432 feet in roughly the time a domestic flight takes to board.

That puts Copper above Keystone at 9,280 feet and above Breckenridge at 9,600.

Medical guidance above 8,000 feet caps sleeping-elevation gain at 1,000 feet per night. A ski trip breaks that rule the moment it leaves the airport. What helps: 3 to 4 liters of water a day, no alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours, and a night in Denver first if the schedule has room.

Not driving the climb yourself is the other half of it. Two hours as a passenger costs your body less than two hours at the wheel above 11,000 feet.

From $499, per car

An SUV with up to six passengers to Copper starts at $499 one way, priced for the vehicle rather than the seat.

Worth a comparison: Keystone carries the same $499 and sits 93 miles out. Copper is 101 miles at the same number, 8 miles further along the same interstate.

Traction law on the near side of the pass

From September 1 through May 31, Colorado’s traction law governs I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. Everything on this route past Morrison falls inside that stretch.

The threshold is tires: a snowflake, all-weather or M+S rating with at least 3/16 inch of tread. Drivetrain is irrelevant to the statute, and vehicles under 16,001 pounds GVWR are all in scope.

Enforcement is priced. Non-compliance is $100 plus $33. Causing a blockage is $500 plus $157, before the tow and before the lost afternoon.

Our fleet meets the standard from the first day of September.

Picking the vehicle

Under 2 hours means a third-row seat is a reasonable place to spend this drive, in a way it stops being on the longer western routes.

Capacity and cargo figures per vehicle are on the fleet page. Give us the passenger count and the ski bag count in the same message, and we size it before the reservation rather than after.

Questions we actually get asked

How long does it take to drive from Denver airport to Copper Mountain?
101 miles and 1h 51m when the roads are clear. On peak ski weekends the same drive stretches to 3h 42m.
How much is a car from Denver airport to Copper Mountain?
From $499 one way for an SUV with up to six passengers — the price is for the vehicle, not per passenger. Tolls, child seats and gratuity are included. Larger groups ride in a Sprinter, quoted on request.
What is the high point of this route?
Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 ft. Weather closes it from time to time, and any detour adds time.
Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
Copper Mountain sits at 9,712 ft, which is 4,432 feet above Denver. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night — a transfer covers that in 1h 51m, which is why the first night often feels rough.
Will our skis and luggage fit?
A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
