Denver → Steamboat Springs

Denver to Steamboat Springs Car Service

Steamboat Springs sits at 6,900 feet, lower than any other ski town we drive to. If thin air has spoiled a trip for you before, that single number is the argument for coming here.

The elevation argument

Steamboat Springs sits at 6,900 feet. Breckenridge sits at 9,600.

Both are ski towns. The 2,700 feet between them decide how your first two nights go.

Denver is 5,280 feet, so Steamboat asks you to gain 1,620 feet of sleeping elevation. The guidance doctors give — no more than 1,000 feet gained per night — starts above 8,000 feet. Steamboat sits below that line entirely.

The usual advice for a Colorado ski trip is to sleep one night in Denver before going up. On this route the gain is small enough that the layover is worth questioning rather than assuming.

You still landed today and you are still skiing tomorrow. Skip alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours, and drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day. That costs nothing and helps everywhere.

The drive is longer than the low elevation suggests

179 miles from Denver International Airport. About 3h 30m when the road is clear.

That makes Steamboat one of the longer runs on our board, though the winter route to Aspen is longer still at 220 miles. The town is lower, not closer.

We publish the clear-road figure only. There is no verified storm-day number for this route, so we do not print one.

Two passes, and the higher one comes first

The route crosses Berthoud Pass at 11,307 feet and Rabbit Ears Pass at 9,426 feet.

Berthoud is the high point of the day. It stands above the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet, which every I-70 resort route uses. Passengers who have been to Summit County assume they know the ceiling on a Colorado transfer. This drive goes over it.

Rabbit Ears comes near the end, at 9,426 feet, when the day is already long.

When Berthoud Pass closes

Berthoud closes for avalanche control in winter. The detour runs through the Eisenhower Tunnel and north on CO-9 from Silverthorne to Kremmling, where it rejoins US-40.

Closures come from the state, not from us, and they happen on the days with the most new snow. Worth knowing before you plan a tight connection home.

Flying into Yampa Valley instead

Yampa Valley Regional (HDN) sits 22 miles from Steamboat Springs. The drive is 28 minutes.

If your HDN flight operates, that is the short version of this trip and we quote it as such. If it cancels and you get rebooked into DEN, the gap becomes 179 miles and two passes on the same day.

Call before you join the rental counter line. Weather that grounds one flight into HDN usually grounds several.

What it costs

From $1,145 for an SUV with up to six passengers, one way. That buys the vehicle, not a seat in it.

The number does not move between January and July. Every published rate is on the rates page.

Choosing the vehicle for 3.5 hours

Three and a half hours changes what counts as enough room.

A Chevrolet Suburban carries six passengers in our configuration. Fold the third row and you get 98.8 cubic feet, or 144.5 cubic feet with everything down. Ski bags are long rather than fat, so a folded row often matters more than raw volume.

Give us head count and bag count when you request the quote. Two numbers, and the vehicle is settled before anyone reaches the curb.

Coming back down

The return crosses the same two passes in reverse order, often in the dark.

We work the pickup time backward from your departure, not from a map estimate.

  • Traction-law compliant vehicle, September through May

Per vehicle or per seat: the actual math

Shared shuttles charge each passenger. We charge for the car. Which one wins depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.

PassengersShared shuttle, totalOur carPer seat with usCheaper
1$126$1,145$1,145Shuttle
2$252$1,145$573Shuttle
3$378$1,145$382Shuttle
4$504$1,145$286Shuttle
6$756$1,145$191Shuttle

On price alone the shuttle wins at every group size on this route. Shuttle rates come from the operator's own page: shared shuttle seats are $126.50 per person.

Price is not the only difference. A shared shuttle, bus or train carries other passengers, makes other stops and leaves on its own schedule. The private car leaves when your flight lands and drives to one address.

Questions we actually get asked

How long does it take to drive from Denver airport to Steamboat Springs?
179 miles and 3h 30m in clear conditions. Winter weekends run longer.
How much is a car from Denver airport to Steamboat Springs?
From $1,145 one way for an SUV with up to six passengers — the price is for the vehicle, not per passenger. Tolls, child seats and gratuity are included. Larger groups ride in a Sprinter, quoted on request.
Which high points does this route cross?
Berthoud Pass at 11,307 ft, Rabbit Ears Pass at 9,426 ft. Weather closes them from time to time, and any detour adds time.
Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
Steamboat Springs sits at 6,900 ft, 1,620 feet above Denver — below the 8,000-foot line where sleeping-elevation guidance starts.
Will our skis and luggage fit?
A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
Should I fly into HDN instead?
HDN is about 28 minutes from Steamboat Springs. Tell us which airport you are landing at when you request the quote.
