Denver → Telluride
Denver to Telluride Car Service
Telluride is the longest transfer we run: 6 to 7.5 hours, and none of it on I-70. The second complication is the local airport, which sits at 9,078 feet and loses flights to weather.
Elevation profile
- Typical drive
- 6h–7h 30m
- Elevation
- 8,725 ft
- Climb from DEN
- 6,032 ft
Passes on this route
- Monarch Pass 11,312 ft on the Crested Butte and Telluride routes, not via I-70

The route leaves Denver heading south
US-285 south, then US-50 west, then CO-145.
Everything travelers read about Colorado ski traffic describes a different highway. The tunnel backup, the toll lane at Empire Junction, the Vail Pass closure alerts — none of that applies to this drive.
Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet is the high point of the day. It also arrives with hours of driving still ahead of it, which is the part people misjudge.
Why this page shows no mileage figure
Published distances between Denver and Telluride do not agree. We found 330, 353 and 382 miles across three sources.
That is a 52-mile spread, and we have not verified which routing produces which number. So we print none of them.
Drive time we do publish: 6 hours with clear roads, up to 7h 30m. For scale, Steamboat Springs runs 179 miles in about 3h 30m. Telluride is close to two of those back to back.
The airport decides the trip
Telluride Regional (TEX) sits 6 miles from the resort. It is also one of the highest commercial airports in North America, at 9,078 feet.
Those two facts pull against each other. Six miles is nothing. Nine thousand feet is why cancellations here are common rather than unusual.
Montrose is the usual fallback
Montrose Regional (MTJ) sits 67 miles from Telluride. The drive takes 1h 15m.
That is the option most people end up using when TEX weather does not cooperate. It turns a 6-mile transfer into a 75-minute one, on a day that was already rearranged by an airline.
The third option is the one this page is about: land at DEN and drive the whole thing. Slower than either regional airport, and it does not cancel.
8,725 feet, reached slowly
The ski resort sits at 8,725 feet. Denver sits at 5,280.
The gain is about 3,445 feet, and it is spread across 6 hours or more. Compare that with a Summit County run, where the same kind of climb happens inside 2 hours.
The standard medical caution above 8,000 feet is to add no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation a night. Nobody’s ski itinerary obeys it. Drinking 3 to 4 liters of water a day and leaving the first-night drinks alone both cost nothing.
Winter tires on a road the statute never mentions
Colorado’s traction law names one corridor: I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero, September 1 through May 31.
This drive never enters the seasonal corridor, though CDOT can put the law into effect on any state highway during a storm, Monarch Pass included. The rules are the same wherever it applies: 3/16 inch of tread, a snowflake, all-weather or M+S rating.
Our cars run winter-rated tires across the whole season, whichever highway the trip uses.
The rate
Telluride is not on our published price list, so this page does not invent one.
Send the date, the pickup airport and the passenger count, and we will quote the specific trip. Everything we do publish sits on the rates page.
If your flight into TEX cancels and you need a car from Montrose instead, say so in the same message. The two versions of this trip are 67 miles apart.
Room for a 7-hour day
Six hours in a third-row seat is a different proposition from 6 hours in the second row.
A Chevrolet Suburban seats six in our configuration, and the last row always eats into the cargo space behind it. Ski bags fail on length rather than bulk, so the folding decision usually matters more than raw volume.
Give us the head count, the bag count and the ski bag count together. Per-vehicle figures are on the fleet page, and we would rather settle the vehicle now than at the curb once a 6-hour day has already started.
What the price includes
- Airport waiting included — a delayed flight is not a rebooking
- Flight tracking — pickup moves with your arrival
- Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal
- Child seats at no charge, on request
- Bottled water in the vehicle
- Gratuity — included, not added at the end
- Traction-law compliant vehicle, September through May
No meter, no surge pricing, no fuel surcharge. The number you are quoted is the number you pay.
There is no shared shuttle on this route
No shared shuttle runs from Denver airport. Operators serve Telluride from Montrose only.
That leaves three options: rent a car and drive the passes yourself, connect through a regional airport, or book a private car from Denver. We do the third.
Questions we actually get asked
- What is the high point of this route?
- Monarch Pass at 11,312 ft. Weather closes it from time to time, and any detour adds time.
- Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
- Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
- How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
- Telluride sits at 8,725 ft, which is 3,445 feet above Denver. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night — a transfer covers that in 6h–7h 30m, which is why the first night often feels rough.
- Will our skis and luggage fit?
- A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
- Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
- Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
- Should I fly into TEX instead?
- TEX is about 15 minutes from Telluride. Tell us which airport you are landing at when you request the quote.
