How long the drive takes
Plan on 85 to 95 minutes from the EGE curb to Aspen in summer. At peak times, allow up to 120 minutes.
Weather and Glenwood Canyon traffic set the real time on the day.
West first, then up CO-82
The Vail and Breckenridge routes from Eagle head east. This one goes the other way.
Your driver leaves Eagle County Regional Airport and takes I-70 west into Glenwood Canyon, a 12.5-mile run between the canyon walls. At Glenwood Springs, the route leaves the interstate for CO-82 East.
CO-82 climbs the Roaring Fork Valley, passing Carbondale and then Basalt. The ride ends at the base of Aspen Mountain, 7,945 feet up. EGE sits at 6,547 feet, so you gain about 1,400 feet between the plane and the slopes.
Glenwood Canyon and mudslides
Since the 2020 Grizzly Creek Fire, I-70 through Glenwood Canyon has closed more than 25 times for mudslides. Most of those closures came in the summer monsoon, not in ski season.
This route uses the canyon, so a closure sits between the airport and Aspen. Landing in summer on a stormy day? Check the CDOT road status and send us your arrival time early.
Independence Pass is not part of this trip
Independence Pass, at 12,095 feet, closes every winter. From Denver, that closure makes the winter route to Aspen about 40 miles longer. From Eagle, you reach Aspen from the west, by the valley road. The pass never comes into it.
For the longer drive from the Front Range, see Denver to Aspen. Staying in the Vail Valley instead? See Eagle Airport to Vail.
Just under 8,000 feet
Aspen Mountain’s base, at 7,945 feet, sits 55 feet below the 8,000-foot mark where sleeping-elevation guidance begins. First-day advice is in our altitude guide.

Questions we actually get asked
- How long does it take to drive from Eagle airport to Aspen?
- 68 miles and 1h 25m–1h 35m in summer. At peak times the same drive can take up to 2h.
- Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
- Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
- How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
- Aspen sits at 7,945 ft, 1,398 feet above Eagle airport — below the 8,000-foot line where sleeping-elevation guidance starts.
- Will our skis and luggage fit?
- A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
- Where do I meet my driver at Eagle airport?
- Private cars meet passengers outside Door 6 of the main terminal, next to oversized ski and snowboard bag claim. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
