I-70 east, then CO-131 north
Your driver leaves Eagle County Regional Airport and heads east on I-70.
At exit 157 in Wolcott, the car leaves the interstate for CO-131 North. This rural two-lane highway runs through ranchland, into the Yampa Valley and on to Steamboat Springs.
That is the whole route: one short interstate stretch, then one two-lane road north.
No pass between Eagle and Steamboat
The Denver route to Steamboat climbs Rabbit Ears Pass at 9,426 feet. The road from Eagle never touches it. CO-131 has no pass at all.
The elevation numbers barely move. EGE sits at 6,547 feet. Steamboat Springs town sits at 6,867 feet, and the resort base at 6,900. You finish about 320 feet above the runway in town, 353 at the resort base.

Winter rules on the I-70 leg
Colorado’s Traction Law covers I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. That corridor includes the stretch from the airport to Wolcott. The law is in force from September 1 to May 31.
If you rent at EGE, the tire rules and fines are in our traction law guide.

Questions we actually get asked
- How long does it take to drive from Eagle airport to Steamboat Springs?
- 86 miles and 1h 50m–2h 5m in summer.
- Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
- Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
- How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
- The town of Steamboat Springs sits at 6,867 ft, 320 feet above Eagle airport — below the 8,000-foot line where sleeping-elevation guidance starts.
- Will our skis and luggage fit?
- A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
- Where do I meet my driver at Eagle airport?
- Private cars meet passengers outside Door 6 of the main terminal, next to oversized ski and snowboard bag claim. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
- What happens if my flight is delayed?
- Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
