Which way the car goes

The car leaves Eagle County Regional Airport, at 6,547 feet, and heads east on I-70.

It climbs over Vail Pass. On the far side it passes Copper Mountain and drops to Frisco. At the Frisco interchange it leaves the interstate for CO-9 South. That road follows the Blue River valley up into Breckenridge.

You climb about 4,100 feet to the top of the pass. You finish about 3,050 feet above the runway you landed on.

The trade-off: Vail Pass

Vail Pass closes for weather roughly 10 to 25 times a winter, usually for a few hours. This route has to cross it.

The 70 to 79 minutes is a summer figure. On a closure day, the clock stops until the pass reopens.

EGE or DEN for Breckenridge?

From Denver International Airport, Breckenridge is 104 miles and 2 to 2.5 hours in summer. That route crosses the Continental Divide inside the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet. It never touches Vail Pass.

From Eagle, the drive is 34 miles shorter: 70 to 79 minutes against 2 to 2.5 hours in summer. You trade the Eisenhower Tunnel for Vail Pass.

Pick the airport that fits your flights, then pick the road. The Denver side is covered on the Denver to Breckenridge page.

Traction law on I-70

The Colorado Traction Law covers I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 to May 31. The I-70 stretch from the airport over Vail Pass to Frisco falls inside it.

Tread depth, tire ratings and fines are in our traction law guide.

If you rent at EGE, check the tires before you reach the pass.

Sleeping at 9,600 feet

Breckenridge sits 1,600 feet above the 8,000-foot line where altitude guidance begins. Above that line, the advice is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night. First-day advice is in our altitude guide.

Questions we actually get asked

How long does it take to drive from Eagle airport to Breckenridge?
70 miles and 1h 10m–1h 19m in summer.
What is the high point of this route?
Vail Pass at 10,662 ft. Weather closes it from time to time, and any detour adds time.
Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
Breckenridge sits at 9,600 ft, which is 3,053 feet above Eagle airport. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night.
Will our skis and luggage fit?
A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
Where do I meet my driver at Eagle airport?
Private cars meet passengers outside Door 6 of the main terminal, next to oversized ski and snowboard bag claim. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
