How to Get from Denver to Steamboat Springs
Fly into Hayden, drive 179 miles over two passes, or book a private car. What each option involves, and what to check before ski season.
There are 2 main ways to reach Steamboat Springs: a flight into Yampa Valley Regional (HDN), or the road from Denver International Airport (DEN). HDN leaves you 22 miles from town. The road is 179 miles and takes about 3 hours 30 minutes when it is clear.
On the road you can drive yourself, share a shuttle or book a private car. There is no ski bus from Denver on the current schedule.
Option 1: Fly into Yampa Valley Regional (HDN)
HDN sits in Hayden, 22 miles from Steamboat Springs. The ground leg takes 28 minutes.
For winter 2025-26, the Steamboat Pilot reported nonstops from 6 airlines: United, American, Alaska, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue. Together they served 17 airports. The winter schedule began December 11, 2025.
We have not verified the 2026-27 schedule yet. Check the airline sites before you book around a specific route.
The trade-off is weather. A canceled flight into a small mountain airport often turns into a rebooking through DEN. At that point you face the 179-mile drive, usually late in the day.
Option 2: Drive from Denver
The main route
Take I-70 west from Denver to exit 232. From there, US-40 climbs over Berthoud Pass at 11,307 feet and continues northwest. Near the end, the road crosses Rabbit Ears Pass at 9,426 feet before dropping into Steamboat.
Berthoud is the highest point of the trip. It tops the Eisenhower Tunnel, at 11,158 feet, by 149 feet.
The town itself sits at 6,900 feet. Most of the climbing happens on the way, not at the destination.
When Berthoud Pass is closed
Berthoud closes for avalanche control in winter. The detour stays on I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel, exits at Silverthorne and follows CO-9 north to Kremmling. At Kremmling you rejoin US-40 and still cross Rabbit Ears Pass.
Check COtrip for closures before you leave the airport, not halfway up the pass.
The western alternate: CO-131
A second approach leaves I-70 farther west at Wolcott, exit 157. Colorado State Highway 131 runs 68.7 miles north through the Yampa Valley. It meets US-40 about 4 miles east of Steamboat.
We have no verified total distance or drive time from Denver on this road. Treat it as a fallback when the passes are the problem, and plan the timing yourself.
Traction law
From September 1 through May 31, Colorado’s traction law covers I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. It applies to all passenger vehicles under 16,001 lbs GVWR, 4WD and AWD included. Both I-70 approaches above run inside that stretch.
The law asks for snowflake-rated winter, all-weather or M+S tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread. The fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge. Our traction law guide covers the details.
Option 3: Bus
CDOT’s Snowstang ski bus currently lists 4 destinations on its routes page: Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Loveland. Steamboat is not on that list.
Snowstang served Steamboat in earlier seasons. Its plans for 2026-27 have not been announced. Check the routes page again before the season starts.
Option 4: Shared shuttle
Steamboat Express, formerly Go Alpine, runs shared shuttles from DEN. Its listed price for a shared seat is $126.50 per person. Check the current fare with the operator before you book.
A shared van carries other passengers. Your total time depends on who else is booked that day.
Option 5: Private car
A private car takes only your group from DEN to Steamboat. You pay per vehicle, not per seat.
For comparison, Storm Mountain Express listed these private DIA-to-Steamboat rates as of October 2026:
- $1,496 for a luxury SUV, up to 6 or 7 passengers
- $1,758 for up to 10 passengers
Our Denver to Steamboat car service costs $1,145 per vehicle, one way, for an SUV with up to 6 passengers. All published prices sit on the rates page.
