You stop before the tunnel, not after it

I-70 west, 80 miles, about 1h 29m on open road. The ski area sits at the east portal, so your exit comes before the bore rather than beyond it.

That is the entire route description. No second highway, no valley road at the end, no turn onto two lanes in the dark.

Keystone is 93 miles and asks you to go under the Continental Divide first. Loveland stops 13 miles short of that, which is why it is the shortest ski run on our board.

On a busy weekend or in weather, the drive stretches to 2h 30m. Same corridor, same bottleneck — you are simply queuing on the near side of the portal instead of the far side.

10,800 feet, and that is the bottom of the mountain

The base sits at 10,800 feet. Not the summit. The place where you put your boots on.

No other destination we serve starts that high. Denver is 5,280 feet, so the gain between the terminal curb and the lift line is 5,520 feet in roughly 90 minutes.

The 1,000-feet-per-night guidance doctors give above 8,000 feet is about where you sleep, not where you ski. Still, a day at 10,800 feet on the back of a red-eye is worth respecting. Drink 3 to 4 liters of water and skip alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Loveland Pass climbs another 832 feet

Loveland Pass tops out at 11,990 feet, which is 832 feet above the tunnel it bypasses.

The pass goes over the Divide instead of under it, and hazmat loads are required to take it because the tunnel will not accept them.

Two different things carry the name here: the ski area and the pass. Only one of them is your destination.

The traction law covers every mile of this drive

The corridor named in the statute is I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero, from September 1 to May 31. This route runs inside it end to end.

Compliance is decided by tires, not by drivetrain. You need 3/16 inch of tread and a snowflake, all-weather or M+S rating. Every passenger vehicle under 16,001 pounds GVWR is in scope, all-wheel drive included.

The ticket for non-compliance is $100 plus a $33 surcharge. Block the road and it becomes $500 plus a $157 surcharge, before the tow bill.

Our vehicles carry legal tires for all 9 months of the window, not just the busy weeks.

Two Colorado places share the name

Loveland Ski Area is the mountain at the tunnel. The city of Loveland is a separate destination in the northern part of the state.

They are different drives at different rates. Say “ski area” when you write to us and nobody wastes an email.

What it costs

Loveland Ski Area is not on our published price list, so this page does not show a number for it.

Send the date, the passenger count and the pickup point, and we will quote it. The routes with published flat rates are on the rates page.

The short-run advantage

80 miles each way makes a day trip realistic here in a way it is not on the 4-hour routes west.

That changes the packing, too. A day’s kit is not a week’s luggage, so the vehicle question is usually about seats rather than cubic feet.

Send us the head count and the number of ski bags in one message. Capacities per vehicle sit on the fleet page, and we name the car before you book.

The drive back down

The descent starts at the highest base elevation in North America and ends at 5,280 feet.

Afternoon eastbound traffic on I-70 builds out of Summit County, and this route joins it already in progress. We set the pickup time against your flight rather than against a map estimate.

What the price includes

  • Airport waiting included — a delayed flight is not a rebooking
  • Flight tracking — pickup moves with your arrival
  • Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal
  • I-70 Mountain Express Lane tolls on peak days
  • Child seats at no charge, on request
  • Bottled water in the vehicle
  • Gratuity — included, not added at the end
  • Traction-law compliant vehicle, September through May

No meter, no surge pricing, no fuel surcharge. The number you are quoted is the number you pay.

There is no shared shuttle on this route

No commercial shared shuttle serves Loveland Ski Area from the airport — it has no base village.

That leaves three options: rent a car and drive the passes yourself, connect through a regional airport, or book a private car from Denver. We do the third.

Questions we actually get asked

How long does it take to drive from Denver airport to Loveland Ski Area?
80 miles and 1h 29m when the roads are clear. On peak ski weekends the same drive stretches to 2h 30m.
Which high points does this route cross?
Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 ft, Loveland Pass at 11,990 ft. Weather closes them from time to time, and any detour adds time.
Do I need snow chains or a special vehicle?
Not in our car. Colorado enforces its traction law on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31, and every vehicle in our fleet carries compliant tires for the full season. In a rental it is your problem: the fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, and all-wheel drive alone does not satisfy the law.
How high is it, and will the altitude bother me?
Loveland Ski Area sits at 10,800 ft, which is 5,520 feet above Denver. Standard guidance above 8,000 feet is to gain no more than 1,000 feet of sleeping elevation per night — a transfer covers that in 1h 29m, which is why the first night often feels rough.
Will our skis and luggage fit?
A Suburban gives 41.5 cubic feet with all three rows up and 98.8 with the third folded. Ski bags are long rather than bulky, so the constraint is usually shape, not volume — tell us the passenger count, bag count and ski bag count and we will size the vehicle.
Where do I meet my driver at Denver airport?
Pre-arranged private cars meet passengers on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2. Your driver waits at the vehicle in the designated pickup area, not inside the terminal.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Airport waiting is included in the price. A delayed flight is not a rebooking.
